reproduce(future) ist eine Anweisung in einer imaginären Programmiersprache. Die Syntax dieses Ausdrucks entspricht derjenigen vieler Programmiersprachen: reproduce ist eine Funktion, future der Input (Argument, Parameter) dieser Funktion. Wir übergeben der Funktion etwas, sie manipuliert es und erledigt damit eine Aufgabe. Ist der Code der Funktion unzugänglich, sehen wir nicht, wie sie berechnet, was sie implementiert. reproduce(future) kann als maschinische Anweisung des Kapitals verstanden werden. Was sie macht unterliegt nicht der Entscheidung eines Individuums oder einer Gruppe. Automatisch setzt sie das Bestehende immer wieder ein, in diesem Fall die Aufrechterhaltung der Rahmenbedingung zur fortgesetzten Verwertung des Werts. Sie reproduziert die Zukunft, in dem sie sie auslöscht. Das ist der Kapitalismus als Technik. reproduce ist eine Blackbox. Herauszufinden, wie sich der Kapitalismus reproduziert, heißt diese Blackbox zu öffnen. Dabei können wir uns nicht damit zufrieden geben, bloß ihre Input-Output-Relationen zu verstehen. Wir müssen zunächst ihre Funktionsweise selbst betrachten. Darüberhinaus gilt es aber auch zu zeigen, dass es sich beim Kapitalismus gerade nicht schlicht um eine Maschine handelt, sondern um soziale Beziehungen. Die Frage nach der Reproduktion des Kapitalismus kann also nicht ohne die Frage nach der gesellschaftlichen Organisation gestellt werden. Die Widersprüche, die sich hier zeigen, sind keine Macken im Code, die wegoptimiert werden können, sondern elementarer Bestandteil der Funktionsweise des Kapitalismus selbst. Sie machen gleichzeitig seine Überwindung möglich. Das erlaubt es uns eine emanzipatorische Zukunft ins Auge zu fassen. In diesem Sinne ist reproduce(future) aber auch ironisch gemeint. Kein Programm und keine Maschine kann uns die politische Arbeit abnehmen. Emanzipation bedeutet, sich gegen die Automatismen zu wenden, die wir selbst durch unser Handeln täglich wieder einsetzen, und sie der gemeinsamen Entscheidung zu öffnen. Weder die befreite Zukunft noch die Befreiung lässt sich an einen Algorithmus delegieren. So verstanden ist reproduce eine unmögliche Funktion. Die (Re-)Produktion einer wünschenswerten Zukunft des Gattungswesen Mensch bleibt zugleich auf die Technik angewiesen. Deshalb gilt es sich den Code der gesellschaftlichen Reproduktion verfügbar zu machen, ihn gemeinschaftlich und in Hinblick auf das Gemeinsame einzurichten. reproduce(future) verweist auf das emanzipative Potential der Technik. In dieser Mehrdeutigkeit enthält reproduce(future) den Untertitel des vierten …ums Ganze! Kongresses – Digitaler Kapitalismus und kommunistische Wette.

reproduce(future) is a command in an imaginary programming language. The syntax of this command corresponds to those used in common programming languages: reproduce is a function, future its input (argument, parameter). We enter something into the function, it manipulates it and thereby fulfills a task. If the code of this function is not available, we cannot see what it does, what it implements. In this sense, reproduce(future) can be understood as a machinic command of capitalism. It is not subordinated to decisions of an individual or a group. Instead it automatically re-enters the status quo again and again, which in this case means the conditions of the continued valorisation of value. The function reproduces the future by erasing it. This is capitalism as technology. reproduce is a black-box. To analyse how capitalism reproduces itself means to open this black-box. But we cannot be satisfied with just understanding its input-output-relations. We have to analyse the function itself, understand the way it works. But even that is not enough. We need to show that capitalism is not simply a machine, but a social relation. Thus, questioning the reproduction of capitalism won’t be successful without questioning the organisation of the social as well. The contradictions that come to the fore are not simply problems for or within the code, which can be made to disappear through its optimisation. They are constitutive elements of the way capitalism functions. At the same time, it is these contradictions that allow us to overcome it, because they also bring into view the possibility of an emancipated future. In this sense, reproduce(future) is meant also ironically. There is no machine that does the political work for us. Emancipation means to resist the automatisms we reinstantiate ourselves every day, through our practices, and to open them up to collective decision-making. Neither a liberated future, nor liberation itself can be delegated to an algorithm. As such, reproduce is an impossible function. Yet, the reproduction of a desirable future for man as species-being remains dependent on technology. That is why we need to make the code of social reproduction collectively available and programme it with regard to the common. Hence, reproduce(future) points to the emancipatory potential of technology. It is this multivalence of reproduce(future) that captures the essence of the subtitle of the forth …ums Ganze! conference – digital capitalism and the communist wager.
